Question from Ontario, Canada:

Does the use of scented lotions, soaps or hand sanitizer on your hands prior to testing your blood sugar have any effect on the outcome of a blood glucose reading?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is possible that there may “interferents” in the lotions, creams, etc. that remain on your skin, so it is best to contact your meter manufacturer to be sure. You may be told, however, that the best approach is to use soap and water or to use an alcohol wipe. Some clinicians do not recommend alcohol wipes (except when away from a sink) as the alcohol dries the skin. Always let your skin dry before checking your glucose and be sure to use your meter and strips exactly as described in the instructions.
