Honeymoon
Question from Moorpark, California, USA:
Regarding the honeymoon phase, I have read different ideas about what to do. Some say to stop any insulin injections, while some studies say to keep injecting at lower doses to help preserve beta cells. Which is ultimately better?
Answer:
Most people prefer continue to inject insulin so that there is no change of insulin allergy when insulin is restarted. The real goal is to normalize the blood glucose levels as much as possible since this may save pancreatic function. It is best to follow the advice of your own diabetes team since they know the patient the best, have reviewed the pre- and postprandial blood glucose levels, A1c levels, etc.
