Question from India:
What are indications for a type 2 diabetic to become type 1?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
Patients with type 2 diabetes do not necessarily transform into type 1 diabetes. However, as patients have type 2 diabetes for longer periods of time, they lose beta cell mass and the ability to respond with a vigorous insulin response. Still, this does not mean they have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes results in no insulin being secreted and can be associated with several autoimmune markers measured in the blood. The most common of these markers is the anti-GAD antibody.
