Pills for Diabetes, Type 2
Question from India:
Which type of metformin is better for obese people? If we follow a diet of soup and tea, can we reduce the dose? Similarly, when overeating, can we increase dose? Can we take plain metformin, 500 mg, after breakfast morning and noon and SR in the late evening?
Answer:
Metformin is available as a generic medication. This helps with the cost of the medication. Whether you use generic metformin or the trade name metformin, both have been shown to improve blood sugars and improve sugars to a similar magnitude. The sustained release form of metformin is a trade name product. The sustained release product does help when the patient cannot tolerate the usual metformin because of stomach problems. My recommendation is to use the generic metformin unless you have stomach problems. The medication is usually taken in the morning with breakfast and in the evening with the supper meal. If you have problems tolerating the metformin, with loose stools, cramping, or indigestion, you can try taking the sustained release product as a once-a-day administration.
