Meal Planning, Food and Diet
Question from India:
Our doctor has indicated that we can consume as much artificially sweetened tea as we want, but one diabetologist has said that such tea is worse than tea with sugar. He said that aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are worse than stevia, supposedly a natural sweetener. What is your opinion?
Answer:
There are many artificial sweeteners on the market today and choices should be made on taste preference. Stevia is a natural sweetener and does well in tea but a little goes a long way. Sucralose (Splenda) and Truvia (commercially produced stevia sweetener) are also good choices. If you do add table sugar to your tea, count 1 teaspoon as 4 grams of carbohydrate in your meal plan and use it in moderation. Personally, the artificial sweeteners taste just as good as sugar and are calorie free.
