Aches and Pains, Complications
Question from Lucas, Ohio, USA:
My 11-year-old daughter, who has had pretty well-controlled type 1 diabetes for nine years, has been complaining of ankle pain. Her ankles appear puffy as do her fingers and face. She plays soccer and softball and is very strong and robust. Could it be her shoes causing the pain? Is she too young for kidney problems and neuropathy?
Answer:
She is not too young for kidney and neuropathy problems. However, there are many other potential causes for generalized swelling. I would suggest getting an appointment with your pediatrician to discuss your concerns. Your daughter would benefit from a comprehensive history and physical examination.
