Complications, Other Medications
Question from Broward County, Florida, USA:
My son was put on lisinopril for a few positive microalbumin levels; how long will this medication take to bring the levels down? Will it be weeks or months?
Answer:
We usually watch microalbumin levels over 4 to 6 months after starting lisinopril or similar ACE inhibitors. It depends somewhat on the exact cause, how high the sugar/A1c levels are now and how long they have been high, whether or not this is reflecting familial kidney/blood pressure problems, history of protein supplementation, smoking contribution, high cholesterol levels, low vitamin D levels, etc. When there is a good response to lisinopril, it can usually be maintained with these other factors; if abnormal, getting corrected also helping this process.
