Planning ahead for emergency situations, like the hurricanes and wildfires we are currently experiencing, can lead to better outcomes. If you haven’t created an emergency plan, or put together your emergency kit, now is the right time to get started. You never know when disaster will strike, so it’s a good idea to have a diabetes emergency kit prepared and readily available, just in case.
Your diabetes emergency kit should have essential diabetes supplies, copies of prescriptions, some food and water, and be stored in a water-tight container. Should you find yourself faced with evacuating your house due to severe weather, you can grab the diabetes emergency kit and know that you’ll have everything you need. For more information on what should be in your diabetes grab-and-go emergency kit, we have a list for you. (You may also wish to pack a diabetes emergency kit for your child at school, and keep it in the classroom, in case there’s a lockdown.) Even smaller details, like your most recent insulin-to-carb ratios and basal rates, are helpful to have on hand, in the event of a crisis.
If you are struggling to access insulin, please review these resources.
Stay safe and as well as possible, friends.
