From her mom, Suzanne:
My daughter was 10 years old when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and spent three days in intensive care. It was a difficult diagnosis. It was an emotional rollercoaster to manage this disease, always worrying, double checking and questioning myself if I was doing everything right for her and preventing future health complications. She tried CGM’s with initial success, and after several months, developed a significant allergy to adhesive and despite multiple barrier creams, she is still unable to use them. She had been bullied and most schools don’t have nurses. I had to request a 504 so there were allowances in place for meals, testing and insulin dosing as well as taking tests after lows or highs and not being penalized for absences for ketones. Thanks to a counselor, the ADA, her great endocrinologists, Camp Midicha, and my daughters strength and understanding of the disease, she is thriving! Does she wish she doesn’t have it? Of course! She doesn’t let it hold her back!
