When I was diagnosed at the age of 16 it changed my entire life as you all already know. I had been sick for so long and know one had any answers for my parents I was continuing to lose weight. I was down to 85 lbs at the time of my diagnosis, which was to say was very Insensitive in the manner it was done. I had just been to the doctors and my mom had requested they do lab work because I had been sick for so long, when the results came back they where supposed to have called my mom but she had stopped by the lab on the way home and they said no one has called you yet. My mom called my family at home and told them that I was going to have to go to the hospital right away for high blood sugar levels. When we finally got in the back of the ER all the doctor had to say was so how long have you had diabetes? And just like that a life changing moment. My mom said “diabetes?” The hospital sent me home In DKA and told me to follow up with my primary doctor. Just such a lack of care for such a life changing event. After being diagnosed diabetes has shaped my life. I am a nurse of almost five years now inspired to help others. I know I’m not the best at writing not one of my strong suits but thank you for taking the time to read my journey and with my 13th anniversary tomorrow I just needed to express it to people who understand.
