I was diagnosed two weeks before my fifth birthday. Diabetes has shaped my life in extremely deep ways to the point that I can’t say now which parts of my personality and who I am are because of being diabetic and which aren’t. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – a lot of qualities I value very highly in myself, like empathy, discipline, self-control are probably things I had to develop partly because of this condition.

Ultimately all lives have their own challenges and circumstances, perhaps of varying degrees, and this fact is one that brings us all together. I am very grateful that a diabetic can live a comfortable and healthy life today, even if it may take more effort than for a non-diabetic person. I look forward to the rest of a rich life.
