After being diagnosed at 10, it took a long time to feel part of a community, or a role model. But this past year, I was able to attend a diabetes convention in Massachusetts that showcased many new technology innovations for diabetes care. While I was there, I came across two families who had newly diagnosed children with type 1. They were trying to learn more about this new part of their lives, and looked so nervous. Upon talking to them, I was able to reassure them that everything will be okay, and give them the best tips I wish I could have told my past self for adjusting to life with type 1. This was the first time I felt like a role model, as I was able to pose a positive impact on those in the community. I felt so happy to be able to comfort those who were new and unsure!
