Asha

From her mom, Desiree:

Asha has lived with type 1 diabetes since she was five years old, and she has never let it stop her from doing the things she has loved. Asha has hiked a 14er in Colorado, run two half marathons, marches in high school band, in addition to being a coxswain for her high school rowing team all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Those accomplishments are amazing in themselves, but I’m most proud of her desire to teach others about her diagnoses. She works with her school nurse and science teachers to teach a lesson on type 1 diabetes to her peers during each school year. Asha explains her devices, how she manages her diabetes and her desire to become an endocrinologist. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since she was diagnosed after a holiday vacation. This diagnosis was foreign to our family, but together with a dietitian, and access to devices she has thrived. We are so happy that it’s been 10 years, though we are hopeful for a cure, we are ecstatic that she is healthy and able to live the life she chooses.
