I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1969 just before my 12th birthday. I remember the day so clearly. I had been home sick for several days and was up very early in the morning to watch the Apollo 9 coverage – I loved space exploration. It was the same morning that I became critically ill and was rushed to the hospital not knowing that my life would be forever changed. I was blessed with great parents, doctors, and a community around me. That began a nearly 56-year journey that has profoundly impacted the way I look a life with the ability to appreciate the smallest of blessings.
