Martha (Maki) Moisan

From her husband, Mike:

My wife’s journey started when she was a sophomore in high school, where we met, and our romance began. At that time, the blood sugar testing was archaic. There were no insulin pumps, and was just a few years into single use disposable needles. To say that this was a life changing event, for a young woman of 15, was a gross understatement. She was then, and continues today, to be a diligent, and committed diabetic. A few years after her diagnosis, she was approached by a Doctor in Detroit, as a possible candidate for an experimental procedure, called Islet Cell Transplantation. She did a lot of soul searching , but eventually declined the offer. Soon after that we were married. During most of this time, the Diabetes was kept pretty much in check. Eventually the conversation of having children came up. We did the Pre- Pregnancy counseling, but this was 1987, and still a long way from what the Medical community knows today. This was another profound change in her life. The short version of her pregnancy was: Over 120 days of multiple hospital stays, Emotional Roller Coaster rides, and, most importantly, a heathy beautiful baby girl…..2 months premature!!! The pregnancy, however, changed her diabetes permanently, and more difficult to control. A year or two later, a new technology came on the scene, the Insulin Pump. As I stated before, the diligent diabetic jumped in, with both feet. She was only the 15th person at our large city hospital to be “pumping”. Since her first pump, she has had 7 or 8 more pumps, from 2 different manufacturers. CGM technology has come into play, and as we know, the CGM now interacts with the pump for dosing. She was part of a year long study with one of the pump manufacturers, and has been approached to do many more. She remains committed to her diabetes, and her diabetic care. Here’s hoping for many more healthy, and happy years!
