I was misdiagnosed at 5 years old. My parents took my to my PCP who mistook my diabetes for the flu and told my parent to give me Gatorade to help balance my electrolytes. When we returned home my parents put me to bed for a nap. When my mom came back to check on me, I had fallen into a coma. I was rushed to the emergency room, where the doctor met us outside and was able to diagnose me in the parking lot due to the smell of ketones radiating from me. I was in a coma for five days. I was told that while I was in that coma and my body was finally receiving what it needed, when I woke up, my parents pointed out that my hair had grown nearly an inch and the baby teethe I had previously lost also started quickly growing in. Fast forward almost 35 years, I now work for the Endocrinology department within the largest healthcare company in the state of South Carolina.
