I was diagnosed with T1D at age 4. I was fortunate that my dad was a family physician. Symptoms were recognized quickly and insulin started without me going into DKA. My dad reached out to his Lilly rep and was referred to an Endo who, through a series of typed letters as the Endo was several hundred miles away, we received treatment advice including the importance of trying to achieve the best control possible. I got my first glucose meter at age 10. Finally decided on a pump in adulthood and eventually adding CGM and HCL when they became available. I’m so thankful that my family just incorporated what I needed into the usual schedule so that I didn’t feel like I was upsetting the routine of the rest of the family. It allowed me to participate in sports, including scuba diving, and travel the world. It has not been all wine and roses, but the positives have outweighed the negatives for me. I focused my career on the field of diabetes working as a diabetes educator and then moving into various roles in diabetes research. Fifty years living with diabetes and no complications. Thankful for the support, the technology that has made things easier with each innovation, and looking forward to seeing what is to come.
