Denise Rimer
I was diagnosed with diabetes on Christmas Eve 1985. Being from a very small town in Iowa, there was little known about diabetes. I grew up quickly. I applied for and have been on an insulin pump since 2004, which though yes, it is amazing, it does NOT replace the fact that I have had diabetes since 12/24/1985. I am alive and I thrive because of insulin. I am grateful for technology, though I appreciate that I know how to check in blood with a glucometer, check my urine for ketones, and change my insulin needs as life happens (for example, traveling to higher elevations or experiencing tubing that is not administering insulin). I love insulin because it has kept me alive.
