President's Award for Innovation

Each year, Children with Diabetes presents the President's Award for Innovation to the health care professional(s) who exemplifies extraordinary leadership in using innovation and advancements in diabetes care technology that help people with diabetes to thrive.

The Chairman of the Board and President of Children with Diabetes present the solid silver President’s Medal to the recipient on the occasion of the Annual ATTD Conference. Invited guests will receive a bronze version of the President's Medal as a memento.

2025 Recipient—Chantal Mathieu

Chantal Mathieu

Professor Chantal Mathieu

Professor Chantal Mathieu is Professor of Medicine at the Katholieke Universiteit and Chair of Endocrinology at the University Hospital Gasthuisberg Leuven, Belgium. Professor Mathieu is a physician-scientist who has contributed to the field of diabetes and endocrinology through basic and clinical research. Her basic research work focuses on pathogenesis and prevention of type 1 diabetes. Prof. Mathieu’s clinical work involving new products and treatment paradigms in diabetes, such as new insulins, adjunct therapies and diagnosis of gestational diabetes have made her a speaker in international fora. Prof. Mathieu coordinates the European clinical trial network for interventions in type 1 diabetes INNODIA and the European project EDENT1FI on screening for type 1 diabetes. Prof. Mathieu is president of EASD and vice-president of the European Diabetes Forum.

2024 Recipient—Bruce Buckingham

Professor Bruce Buckingham

Bruce Buckingham, MD, is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology at Stanford Medical Center and Stanford Children’s Hospital. Renowned for his groundbreaking research in continuous glucose monitoring in children and closed-loop (artificial pancreas) systems, Dr. Buckingham has served as the principal investigator in multiple NIH, JDRF, and Helmsley-sponsored research studies. Furthermore, his dedication extends to his role as a cherished faculty member at Children with Diabetes' Friends for Life conferences. As automated insulin delivery systems become the standard of care for people living with type 1 diabetes, CWD would like to recognize Dr. Buckingham for his strong advocacy for these systems from the early stages of their development all the way to the current state-of-the art systems such as Tandem Control IQ, Omnipod 5, Medtronic 780G, CamAPS FX, and Beta Bionics iLet.

2023 Recipient—Irl Hirsch

Professor Irl Hirsch

Irl Hirsch, MD, MACP, is Professor and Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Chair, Professor of Medicine, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Nutrition, at the University of Washington Medical Center Diabetes Institute, Seattle, Washington, USA. Dr. Hirsch has authored more than 200 research papers, 60 editorials and three commentaries for the Journal of the American Medical Association, numerous book chapters, and six book for patients and physicians. Well-known for his annual “rants” in Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics, Dr. Hirsch is a frequent faculty member at CWD’s Friends for Life Conferences across the United States, sharing his knowledge and experience with patients and providers in the diabetes community. A former chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association, he is a recipient of the ADA’s Josiah K. Lilly Sr. Distinguished Service Award.

Professors Moshe Phillip and Tadej Battelino

Professor Moshe Phillip is the director of the Institute for Endocrinology and Diabetes, National Center for Childhood Diabetes at Schneider Children's Medical Center, Petah Tikva, Israel, and a Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Dean for Research and Development at Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel. Professor Tadej Battelino is a professor of pediatrics and head, Chair of Pediatrics at the Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine, and the head of Department of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the UMCUniversity Children's Hospital Ljubljana, Slovenia. Together, Professors Phillip and Battelino created the ATTD conferences to speed the development, approval, and adoption of diabetes care technology to improve the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes.
