Like many T1Ds, my journey with diabetes is filled with ups and downs. I’ve traversed the lowest of lows: living in denial and neglecting my diabetes (A1C in excess of 12) to my current high where I take advantage of all the amazing technology and medicine available and currently have an A1C of 5.5. I had very bad retinopathy that required laser surgery but through consistent maintenance of my blood glucose it’s in complete remission.

Through the amazing care I receive at the Barbara Davis Center in Colorado, I’m always on the cutting edge of technology and that includes insulin, I was an early adopter of Lyumjev after years of using Humalog.

The journey is long, it’s a daily struggle to maintain good glucose levels but the reward is worth it. As someone who was diagnosed just after college I was able to taste the forbidden fruit and yes, I miss the taste of Coca Cola on a hot summer day and the refreshing glass of orange juice in the morning, but now I can enjoy an ice cold Pibb Zero instead. I feel fortunate to have been diagnosed in this era where options abound in technology, medicine and food.

Thank you Eli Lilly for my life juice as I affectionately refer to it!
