I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when i was 4 years old (October 12, 2004). It’s a coincidence it happened on that day because it was my future husband’s 4th birthday as well! Before the doctors diagnosed me with diabetes, they actually told my mom I had leukemia. I never really understood growing up why I had to be diagnosed with diabetes. I always wished I wasn’t.
I remember growing up, I would feel uncomfortable if my blood sugars went too high or too low during class because other students thought I would be getting special treatment and they treated me differently.
People always ask me when a cure is found if I would ever want to receive it but I always say no. I say no because I’ve never known another life without diabetes and honestly I don’t know how I would adjust to not watching what I eat, checking my blood sugars, making sure I have enough supplies, etc.

since 2004
