I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 10 years old. I grew up a child of a diabetic so I’ve always known about insulin and blood sugar tests and all the other things, but it’s very different when it’s your parent compared to when it’s yourself. I’ve struggled with high sugars and DKA and high risk pregnancies but I’ve been so lucky to be able to teach people about diabetes. People see my CGM or my pump and ask questions and I get to inform them as well as correct some of the misinformation people have heard. 29 years ago, diabetes was a lot scarier than it is now and with more research and information it keeps getting easier to control and live a normal, fun-filled life.
