I was diagnosed after being really sick with the flu one fall. At Christmas that year I had cottonmouth and drinking water like crazy and peeing all the time. My mom took me to the doctor right after Christmas and my story as a type 1 diabetic began. My sister had died from diabetes (9 years old) when I was 4. I still remember that terrible feeling from that day. My journey has had its ups and down, but I am thankful for my family’s support and All the nursing and doctors who have helped me get to where I am today. My husband Rafael–I couldn’t have done and gone through this without him! I really think living on a farm helped me the most growing up. I was outside doing whatever needed to be done, walking to school everyday, walking to work everyday. I used Weight Watchers as my food guide and I used Jazzercise when a young adult. It’s been an interesting journey for sure. Would I change it? The answer is no, not at all. I love how far the technology has come for us. It’s a lot easier now for us in many ways. This past Christmas was my 60th Diaversary and I haven’t decided what or how to celebrate (I had a party for my 50th, and raised money to send kids to diabetes camp and money for my doctors research in diabetes).
