I take Humalog before meals and NPH in the evening. I actually thought I was doing great with regards to my blood glucose levels, until my pharmacist told me I was taking way too much insulin. Am I taking more insulin than normal? Is that good for me? I figured as long as my blood sugar levels are under control, things are good.

If his blood sugars are in range at breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime, but are, at times high, without ketones) between these times (i.e., two-three hours after meals), is there cause for concern? My 13 year old step-daughter was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in another state, and even though she has spent several weeks in a hospital the doctors were never able to get her down below 300 mg/dl [16.7 mmol/L]. She is coming to live with us because her mother does not have time and is making her fearful of injections. I don’t have a clue as to what kinds of foods she will need.

My son, who has been using Actrapid with Protaphane for 10 years, and he is fairly well controlled, although not keen on testing. His doctor has suggested several times that there is a better type of insulin but he will not make the change, and I feel he is avoiding it since the new insulin may require frequent testing. My 14 year son has ADHD and diabetes, and even with Lantus and a sliding scale of Humalog, his sugars are very out of control. He is on medication for the ADHD but is still having a big problem with impulse control.
