When my father takes his medicine continuously (let’s say for 14 days), his sugar easily goes down, but when he stopped taking it for a week, his sugar went up. We don’t understand. Does he really have diabetes? If so, what type? What should we do to normalize his blood sugar? Please advise as to what foods should he eat and should not eat.

I have had type 1 diabetes less than six months and want to know if I have a sugar score of 163 mg/dl [9.1 mmol/L], are insulin shots necessary every day? Should I also test my level?

My three year old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and it’s been three months since he had blood work done. We went to the endocrinologist there and no blood tests were done nor even a urine specimen taken. I am very frustrated with this team and really need to also find another specialist. Shouldn’t they be monitoring his A1c and any other levels on a regular basis?

I usually get to bed about l:00 am, get up at 6:00 am and check my blood sugar. I usually am in the normal range, but when I arise for the day at l0:00 am, drink three cups of coffee, and then eat breakfast at 11:30 am, my blood sugars have risen dramatically. Can caffeine have that much of an effect on rising blood sugars?

My two year old son is on multiple daily injections (Lantus with Humalog), and we are doing pretty well keeping his blood sugars under control during the day. At night, however, he runs very high and drops between 3:00 am and 6:30 am. What do you suggest we do to keep him from having such wild swings?

I am 38, have type 2 diabetes, I have lost 34 pounds, and my A1c goes down each time I visit the doctor. If I continue losing weight, along with exercising and eating right can I expect to go off medication or have I passed the point of no return?

My son wakes up in range, but his blood sugar will actually go from normal to high in an hour and a half, even when he eats just protein — no carb! On weekends, when he sleeps in an hour, we don’t have this problem.

I am on a large amount of medication for type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I recently started the South Beach diet and am losing weight now, but my blood glucose levels have dropped, and my blood pressure has also dropped. Is this a normal occurrence? If not, how can I better regulate the medication?

At this time we bring our grandson to Dartmouth Medical center. He sees a diabetes nurse 90% of the time. I am not even sure anymore who the diabetes doctor is. We could bring him to Boston and my question is, which hospital would his care be supervised better at?

My 10 year old son, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age four, is on Humalog three times a day and NPH twice, but we have never been able to get him regulated; he still has highs and lows. We feel his diet is good, and he seems healthy, happy and is active. However, his doctor thinks he could be better controlled. Can you comment on these readings and perhaps suggest what we may be doing wrong and ways we could improve?
