My son, diagnosed six months ago and still in his honeymoon, is taking Lantus once a day and 1 unit of Humalog per 15-20 grams of carb. Despite a normal fasting before-meal breakfast blood glucose, he seems to need even more Humalog for breakfast coverage than any other meal in the day. Why would this happen?

Our 13 year old had a routine urine test which showed ketones and glucose, his A1c was 11.4%, and he had a high level of antibodies. The doctors say this an indication of diabetes, but there is some question as to whether or not to start him on insulin yet. He has none of the symptoms, but his fasting blood sugars are between 8 and 11 mmol/L [144 and 198 mg/dl]. How do we know the best way of dealing with this?

I am now 31 years old, I have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years, and I have I have had no complications so far. I had pretty good control until about two years ago, and now my A1cs are 12 to 12.5%. I recently changed from Monotard and Actrapid to Ultratard and NovoRapid insulin with a drastic increase in dose. My morning blood sugars seem to have spiraled out of control. Our 18 month old daughter, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes four months ago, is currently on an insulin regimen of NPH and Humalog. Two hours after breakfast, she is almost always very high, and although we have tried adjusting the size of her breakfast and her morning dose, nothing seems to help. Is there any way to avoid this morning high? Is it doing long term damage?.

My two year old son has type 1 diabetes and is in good control, but I want to know how long it takes for certain foods with carbs to start working. I know sugar alone or candy works right away, but when I give him rice or pasta, I can test him an hour later and he is still low. How many carbs should he have for each unit of insulin? We’ve been giving him 1 Unit for each serving (15 grams). Is this correct?

My six year old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I had a very hard time the first year of school with severe highs and lows. His control was good until school started again. Now, his morning readings are ranging from 300+ mg/dl [16.7 mmol/L] to 400+ mg/dl [22.2 mmol/L]. Could his readings be caused by some kind of stress?

My six year old son has had type 1 diabetes for the last three years. Recently, he has had episodes of low blood sugars. He was admitted to the hospital and found to have anti-insulin antibodies. His blood sugars are now in the 200-300 mg/dl [11.1-16.7 mmol/L] range. We are gradually increasing his insulin. Our endocrinologist and his partner have different opinions of what we need to do. Do you have any suggestions?
