We have adjusted for his hockey games, but they have also occurred when there has been no activity the evening before. His blood sugars have been normal at bedtime and he’s had a healthy snack. I am confused as to how exercise lowers blood glucose levels. Intuitively, it would seem that physical activity would require more insulin as cells would need more glucose for energy. What is the mechanism of action that reduces blood glucose levels with exercise?

He has joined the school’s wrestling team, but the insulin doesn’t seem to work. He did the same thing during baseball, but not as badly. Could this be from adrenalin? What do we do?

I have read that someone with type 1 diabetes taking more exercise than usual can take less insulin or should eat more carbohydrate. If insulin is used to get glucose into the body’s cells, why should more activity require less insulin? Is insulin sometimes required twice (being used to store carbohydrate currently not wanted in the liver)?

We will visiting Canada and skiing there. Do you have any tips on keeping the pump (and the insulin) warm while skiing? Up until now we have had our daughter keep the pump close to her body so that body heat will keep it from freezing, but Australian ski fields aren’t quite as cold!
