Hyperglycemia and DKA

I am a 43 year old male with type 1 diabetes. I’m otherwise healthy with no complications and exercise at athletic levels. Until last year, I never had an experience with ketoacidosis that required ER attention. My endocrinologist said that I had concurrent DKA with lactic acidosis. Is this very common?

My 15 year old daughter had blood in her urine at her last doctor’s visit. Two weeks later, on a repeat sample, there wasn’t any blood, it showed 4+ sugar and 1+ ketones. How can she be spilling sugar (is 4+ a lot?) when her diabetes is under pretty good control? What about the ketones?

On the days that my daughter has attended camp, her snack glucose is running over 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L], and I also noticed that she is drinking very little of her water. On a non-camp day, she is in the normal range. Is it possible that these high glucoses are due to dehydration? If she replenished her liquids, would she most likely be in the normal?

My son is on a constant carb diet, and I was told it was okay to pick foods with sugar, so I give him these treats only in moderation. He is thin so they said not to worry too much about the fat. However, as time goes by, his glucose numbers seem to be rising. Is it okay to be giving him these kinds of foods in his meal plan? Could the higher fat foods be causing higher blood sugars?

He has rather high blood sugars in the morning, and during the past three weeks he has been spilling anywhere from a trace to moderate amount of ketones. Any suggestions?

I am a 23 year old college student with multiple medical problems, and I have been on TPN since age 16. Three weeks ago I had a celiac plexus block with steroids, and since then my blood sugars have been running anywhere from 140-190 mg/dl [7.8- 10.6 mmol/L], sometimes going as high as 200-220 mg/dl [11.1-12.2 mmol/L]. What has your experience been with patients on TPN getting high blood sugars? Are the ranges that I am having normal?
