Hypoglycemia

My seven year was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about a year and a half ago. For the last 10 days or more, he has been having a number of low blood sugars (2.5-3.4 mmol/L [45- 61 mg/dl]) during the night, in the early morning hours, after which he vomits. We have cut back our long-acting 5 units, yet he still seems to be low. Any thoughts?

My four year old daughter, who has type 1 diabetes, is on three shots a day, and she frequently low between 4:00 am- 6:00 am. Should I be concerned about having to give extra snacks at midnight (weight gain, morning highs)? Do you have any other suggestions for avoiding these lows or sleeping through the night?

I do not have diabetes, at least not diagnosed, and I have been having severe hypoglycemic symptoms at night. I have symptoms during the day as well but can treat them more quickly. I did not feel symptomatic at a blood sugar of of 63 mg/dl [3.5 mmol/L], yet on other days I have felt symptomatic at 77 mg/dl [4.3 mmol/L]. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

My son had an unexplained episode which seems to have been caused by low blood sugar. I have been testing his blood sugar levels on my own, at bedtime and upon waking, and I am keeping a diary of them. Have you heard of this? Should I be checking his sugar certain times of day? Do you feel I should make an appointment with a pediatric endocrinologist?

As someone experienced with type 1, I recently aided an acquaintance who was having a severe hypoglycemic reaction. After an entire can of Coke and 10 minutes, his blood sugar was 29 mg/dl [1.6 mmol/L]. I then gave him 1 mg glucagon. Was this the appropriate treatment?

We have been waking my son up for two years, but the lack of sleep is taking its toll. We want to maintain good control of our sons’ diabetes and get a full nights sleep. He rarely but has on occasion gone low in the middle of the night. How much should we worry about him dying in his sleep from a low?
