Hypoglycemia

Recently, my 49 year old brother, who has had diabetes for over 12 years and takes insulin, has had episodes of his sugar dropping so low that he is unresponsive and loses control of his kidneys. We have to call the paramedics to give him an IV and get his sugar back up. Then once he is conscious, he refuses to go the hospital. What can we do? Why would his sugar be dropping so low? Last night this happened, and my mom just happened to find him. It scares us all.

My 13 year old son, who developed diabetes 10 months ago, occasionally wakes up in the middle of the night feeling he’s having a hypo, though in reality his levels aren’t that low. However he’s worried that he won’t make it through until morning without eating or drinking juice, so will have a biscuit or orange juice at 2-4 am (obviously depending on when he wakes up). Is this really necessary or would he be likely to last until he gets up at 6.30 am without doing this?

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, I was told that I might develop retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. However, I was never once told that I would acquire hypoglycemic unawareness, that I developed after I transferred from animal to synthetic insulin. When did the term ‘hypoglycemic unawareness’ originate and who coined it?

My daughter is 11 years old and has headaches everyday. She has been diagnosed with migraines and low blood pressure. The one thing I have noticed that seems to help is if she eats frequently throughout the day. Is it possible she actually does have a blood sugar problem?

She drinks a large amount of Sprite. We tried to stop her drinking it at night. The next morning I found her very sweaty, trembling, her heart was pounding and the rate was very quick, she was breathing fast, and when I got her to wake up, she was very hungry and stumbling around. She was better after feeding. We tried again and the same thing happened. Could this be episodes of hypoglycemia, and if it is, should I just keep giving her the Sprite?

My three and one-half year old daughter has had three to four episodes of unexplained low blood sugars. During one episode, she was hospitalized, and we were told that her liver stores may have been depleted which accounted for lows. Could you explain this to us?

I heard recently that the longer a person has diabetes, the shorter the amount of time that person has to identify the symptoms of a “low” and treat it before having a seizure or passing out. Is this really true?

My son is 10 years old. Last year he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He has had three seizures. I want to know if his sugar drops from 300 down to 83 real fast if that can cause a seizure.

My husband was experiencing dizziness, fatigue, and inability to concentrate. Finally, his doctor said that he has hypoglycemia and suggested a change in my husband’s diet. The doctor said that my husband was to no longer have carbohydrates, and he is to eat every two to three hours. Where can I locate a diet with some realistic food directives?
