Insulin Analogs

We are thinking of switching my son from NPH to Lantus, and I have several questions.

My adult daughter is on an insulin pump with Humalog but would like to take a break from the pump and try Lantus with Humalog. How are they calculating the Lantus dosage during transition? How long should pump delivery be halted before starting Lantus? What is the incidence of hypoglycemia with Lantus?

My six year old started using Lantus six months ago, and the last three vials have caused midmorning highs and lunch time lows. Is it possible that Lantus is peaking 12 hours after injection or her morning Humalog effect is delayed for some reason?

I have been taking Lantus for about five weeks. It seems to be doing very well, but I am concerned about a couple of things. Because it is so new, many say there has been no study of this. My 10 year old son is on three shots per day of Actrapid [Regular] and Insulatard [NPH], but recently his pediatrician advised us to switch to Lantus once daily instead of the Insulatard in addition to three shots of Actrapid with meals. However, I read that Lantus regulates the rate of growth of children. Could you give me your opinion?

I have always had low blood pressure, but since I started taking Lantus (and this may be coincidental) my blood pressure is elevating, and I did see an article that said that a side effect of the Lantus is retention of sodium. Have you heard of this? Have any of your patents over the age of 50 brought this up? I have a good diet, I’m not overweight and exercise.

My three year old son uses a very small amount of Humalog, and due to the expense of his medication when we were using the 10 ml vials, we opted for the cartridges. The major difference is that we still give him his medication using a syringe versus using the Inject-Ease that the cartridges were designed for. Do you thing using cartridges instead of vials is possibly affecting his readings?
