Insulin

Can anyone give me an idea of the daily amount and type of insulin for a 9-year-old? A general idea? I know there are individualistic considerations, but I can’t find an example child or a case study on dosages? Any suggestions?

I have been aggressive in trying to control my four year old’s blood sugars. I use Humalog for high carb low-fat meals, Regular for low-carb meals, a mix of Humalog and Regular for high fat, high carb meals, and diluted Humalog for correction doses. I think my doctors are happy with his control, but I had to tell them about mixing insulins. Do you think it could benefit patients to know this information?

We were told my son who is only on twice daily NPH insulin is still in the honeymoon, but I am concerned about his sugar levels rising too high after meals. Should I be giving him at least some fast acting insulin? Is his body handling the surge until the NPH goes to work?

Our eight year-old son has had diabetes since the age of three. Would an injection of Humalog and NPH before his noon meal put him at risk for lows in the afternoon? I would be hesitant to load him up with more NPH at noon, fearful that it would be too much combined with the carryover effect of his morning NPH.

My eight year old daughter has had diabetes for four years. She frequently gets severe stomachaches and headaches. She tested negative for celiac disease and has normal bowel movements. Have any other studies been done? Have studies comparing different insulin brands/types with stomachache reports been done?

My 11 year old son was switched to a protocol of Lantus (15mg) h.s. and NovoLog bolus at meal time. Recently we have seen a pattern: He is low normal in the A.M. Two hours later he will be high We bolus appropriately and usually he comes down by supper. At bedtime he is high again. Any advice on the very high post-prandial blood sugar?

I’ve had type 1 diabetes since 1986. When I eat, my blood sugar goes high because the insulin effect starts 30 minutes after injection and blood glucose isn’t normalised until two hours after injection. So if I eat five times each day, my blood sugar is high for ten hours each day. Could we inject insulin straight into the circulation (intravenous), perhaps by an automatic machine?

My son was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He now takes no insulin and still has low blood sugars. What could be causing the low blood sugars?

At my doctor’s suggestion, I started taking Protophane at night and have been increasing the dosage to try to lower my blood sugars. I saw no lower numbers, so I tried a new vial of insulin and still saw no improvement. Why doesn’t the insulin seem to be working?
