Insulin

I just found out my two year old daughter has diabetes, and I am still struggling with trying to regulate her insulin. Why does my two year old’s insulin need to be diluted with saline solution?

My daughter is using Lantus in the evening and Actrapid three times a day for meals because we cannot cover the long time span between breakfast and lunch, but I see that you recommend Humalog or Novolog. We’re using this fast acting insulin just if we go to restaurants or if we have no time before lunch or dinner. Is it possible to use both Actrapid and Humalog/Novolog for premeal insulin?

My daughter only has one shot of 6 units of NPH in the morning. This lasts her through supper, then at bedtime she is usually in the 200s mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L] and the same at 3 am. Even at those high numbers, her morning sugar is in the low 100s mg/dl [5.6 mmol/L]. Should she be having an injection to cover those two time frames when she is high or will she just end up going too low by morning?

Could you please explain to me in detail how NPH works? I am especially interested in how the insulin molecule is released into the blood stream detaching itself from its binding to protamine. I have read that protamine may cause the immune system to make antibodies to the insulin. Is this the cause of the unpredictable peaks of NPH?

I was surprised to hear my granddaughter is getting five to six insulin shots a day, rather than two. Her blood sugars are erratic, too. Is this normal?
