Other Illnesses

My daughter has been ill for around 6 months. She has Ankylosing Spondylitis and has had Glandular Fever both diagnosed within the last 4 months. It also doesn’t seem to affect her blood sugars dramatically. Is this common in children and how do I help her return to her daily activities?

A few weeks ago, my 11 year old daughter, just diagnosed about two months ago, began losing quite a bit of hair. Her thyroid test was normal, and the doctor said it could be hormones, but I think it’s more likely caused by the stress her body has gone through. Can you explain the hormone relationship to hair growth or loss? What kind of a time frame am I looking at with this?

Is she in danger of hearing loss or worse from these chronic infections? Is her blood sugar the culprit in this situation?

My ten and one-half year old daughter has had type 1 diabetes for 14 months. Last winter, she developed a Brown’s syndrome in her eye, and her eye does not “track” with the other. Is the Brown’s related to type 1 diabetes? Will the large doses of ibuprofen interfere with her diabetes treatment?

My two year old daughter has been having episodes in which she wanders around (or at night just sits up in bed) and her hands twitch and she mumbles incoherently. Her eyes are glazed and “a million miles away”. It seems that she has these episodes a lot more when she has had higher amounts of sugar. Can it be a coincidence or should I have her tested for something sugar related?

My son became very lethargic one morning before breakfast. The pediatrician directed us to the emergency room. At 12:30 pm they said he had acidosis, but that his sugar was 65 mg/dl. At 6:45 p.m., they sent us home with diagnosis of gastroenteritis and dehydration. His last blood test showed 255 mg/dl. His pediatrician assured me that he is fine. If he were your patient or son, what would you do?
