Both of my children were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18 months and had received the new chickenpox vaccination at 15 months of age. I find it hard to believe it’s a coincidence. Has anyone raised the question, or made a correlation between the chickenpox vaccination and the onset of type 1 diabetes?

My 11 year old friend has begun metformin (500 mg twice a day) to possibly prevent diabetes and is not scheduled to see the doctor again for six months which seems like a long time to wait. Once metformin begins, should blood sugar be tested and how often? What studies have been done? There is very little information on this, and nothing I could find for pediatric use.

I bought an inexpensive glucose meter, and my fasting levels have been normal so I presume that I don’t have diabetes yet. If I lose weight and exercise more in a prevention effort, would those levels likely go even lower? Is there any way for me to know or prove that I am doing enough, and am improving?
