A family member is very worried about her infant daughter developing type 1 diabetes. She has only breast fed her seven month old, and on the recommendation of her pediatrician, has avoided feeding cow’s milk formula because of a possible increased risk. Her baby doesn’t tolerate soy. Both my children have type 1 diabetes, and the children’s father has carcinoid tumours. I found a piece of research, stating that 92% of children with Type 1 diabetes and islet cell antibodies were found to have antibodies also to gastrointestinal carcinoid tumours. Might this provide an explanation, or identify a risk, in the case of our children, or is this just coincidence?
