Question from Apple Valley, California, USA:

A friend was diagnosed with diabetes the day after a car accident and spent three days in hospital after the accident due to his blood sugar levels. He had no prior history of diabetes and had check ups that would have revealed it. Two doctors have told him diabetes can be brought on by trauma. Is this true?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is pretty rare for diabetes to start as a result of trauma, but possible. It is more likely this was a stressful event, and your friend was already susceptible genetically. He should ask his doctor and make sure that he sees a diabetes specialist to be sure he gets an up-to-date answer.
