I want to begin by thanking you for answering my prior question. Since writing the last question, I have been able to get the results of the A1c from the endocrinologist’s office. My eight-year-old daughter’s A1c was 5.0, which he said was not normal but okay, before he went into his rant about monitors not being accurate. I believe my daughter’s regular doctor has done the antibody testing before, which I believe came back normal. Do you know of any other pediatric endocrinologist in Maine besides the group in Portland? My daughter had a weekend of extreme tiredness recently right after her latest appointment when I was told I didn’t have to check her sugars anymore. So, I didn’t check them, but was wondering if I should just in case.
Answer:
I am puzzled because an A1c of 5.0 is very normal; normal range is about 4 to 6% plus/minus 0.1 to 0.2 in different systems (i.e., could be 4.1 to 6.1). It may be closer to go to New Hampshire or even down to Boston. There are two clinics in New Hampshire, one in Manchester and the other in Lebanon at Dartmouth, and about 30 in Boston including the Joslin Clinic, Children’s Hospital, New England Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, Boston Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and Floating Hospital/Tufts.
