About how high do your average blood sugars have to be for your doctor to place you in the hospital?

That is a very individualized question and answer. A lot depends on the trend of glucose readings, the person’s overall health status, and the doctor’s comfort level with the patient’s ability to follow directions. So, I don’t think there is an absolute glucose value which, if reached, prompts hospitalization. But, if the glucose level is elevated and there are ketones in the blood or urine and the patient is ill with vomiting and dehydration and there is a change in the level of alertness, then THAT person warrants hospitalization immediately for Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).

Certainly, children with worsening glucose trends and higher levels of A1c determinations might warrant hospitalization in order to try to get to the bottom of why the control has gotten worse.
