Question from San Giuliano, Milano, Italy:
An eight year girl was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. When should celiac markers be verified?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
There is no set time to ascertain when to check for celiac disease. Some units will check for antibodies at the time of diagnosis of diabetes, others will check yearly following diagnosis, others will check only if symptoms develop. You should talk this over with your diabetes team. Remember that coeliac disease is slightly more common in patients with type 1 diabetes, and antibodies do not diagnose the disease, but are merely markers to suggest that the disease may be present.
