Diagnosis and Symptoms
Question from Egypt:
Are the symptoms of type 1 diabetes continuous all over the day? Or, does it sometimes go away for some days and return again? Are they affected by menstruation?
What does polyuria means? What amount of urine constitutes polyuria? How many times a day of urination can be considered polyuria?
Answer:
For someone with a new diagnosis of diabetes, the symptoms are likely to be all throughout the day and even the night. In the very early stages before diabetes has been diagnosed, the symptoms can certainly be sporadic. Women with diabetes frequently find that blood sugar control is more difficult with more frequent high blood sugars during menstruation and they often require larger amounts of insulin during menstruation.
Polyuria is typically defined simply as producing excessive amounts of urine, compared to others your age. I did find a single definition that suggested greater than 2.5 liters per day in an adult would be excessive.
