As a parent of two diabetics, I can easily smell if either of my children has ketones from their breath. Can the diabetic taste the ketones?

No, they can smell them but can’t taste them. Ketones are partly eliminated through the lungs with breathing (as acetoacetone); however, there aren’t selective taste receptors for them in the tongue.
