My six-year-old nephew recently fell off the monkey bars and fractured his right tibial plateau. He is in a long leg cast. Recently, his mother has noticed nocturia, polyphasia and a thirst she cannot quench. He was in the doctor’s office for a follow-up appointment for his fracture. His fasting blood sugar was in the 400s mg/dl [over 22.2 mmol/L]. The doctor’s office wants to send him to the Emergency Room at a hospital 2.5 hours away for treatment. Is the long bone fracture in itself enough to cause the hyperglycemic events?
