Celiac

Question from Rockton, Illinois, USA:

Can a seven-month-old have celiac disease? The infant’s mother and father both have sisters with type 1 diabetes.

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Yes, but celiac disease stems from the inability to digest the protein called gluten. So, symptoms would be expected to occur after the introduction of certain grains into the diet, primarily wheat, barley, and rye. Rice, potatoes, corn and oats do not contain significant amounts of gluten, however, they can be cross-contaminated at the mill or during processing.
