Question from Largo, Florida, USA:
Can fasting cause you to fail the one hour glucose test? After eating fruit and a piece of birthday cake, my level was 158 mg/dl [8.8 mmol/L]. Is that a very high number to have after cake and fruit?

In theory, you do not need to fast when taking the one hour glucose test. However, the results may be more accurate after fasting. Fasting will not make the test worse. A glucose value of 158 mg/dl [8.8 mmol/L] is elevated and requires more formal testing such as the three hour, 100 gram glucola test.
