Hyperglycemia and DKA, Other
Question from Gilberts, Illinois, USA:
Can high blood sugars cause anxiety or panic attacks and be stopped with insulin in a quick amount of time? Also, can reading vision change with blood sugar changes? What does a student do when this happens throughout the day?
Answer:
Low sugars (hypoglycemia) can sometimes be confused with anxiety but usually do not cause anxiety itself. High sugars do not usually cause anxiety, but some youngsters can be worried about what caused the high sugar levels in the first place (sneaking candy, overeating, omitting insulin or even random high sugar levels and worrying about getting yelled at, damaging eyes, etc.).
Vision changes with glucose levels frequently and some people are more sensitive to such changes than others. There isn’t much you can do except try to better control the blood glucose swings.
If there are ongoing concerns, please consult with the child’s diabetes team for more specific advice.
