Complications

Question from Salt Lake City, Utah, USA:

Can most or all complications be avoided if diabetes is detected early and is properly managed (regular monitoring, proper diet, insulin shots)?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Ahh, I wish that were entirely true, but unfortunately, it is not. The DCCT demonstrated that the risk of complications (nerve problems, kidney damage, eye problems) can be significantly reduced (by about 70% in some cases), and that patients who already have some complications can have a slower rate of progression — with attention to good control, but the reduction is not 100%.

Having said that, it does not mean that all people with diabetes will get complications. It’s an odd’s thing, like placing a bet. Would you go to Las Vegas if you knew you’d win 70% of the time?

Also, the DCCT was looking for intensive control, but not everyone achieved excellent control. However, most achieved “good” control.
