Question from Elkhorn City, Kentucky, USA:
Can people with diabetes use foot spas?
Answer:
Yes, they can. However, you need to be careful what you do. If you mean a foot spa where you place your feet in a device that vibrates and warms the water, this is acceptable with the caution that the water temp needs to be carefully tested with a thermometer or some other reliable means of preventing the skin coming in contact with burning water. This is necessary because patients with diabetes have neuropathy and can lose sensation in their feet. An additional issue is the presence of an open sore that may get worse with exposure to less than sterile water. Finally, anything that cuts or debrides the skin should be avoided.
