Question from London, England:
I have been told by a friend who has diabetes that excessive intake of fruit juice can lead to type 2 diabetes. Is this only because of the increased risk associated with weight gain or can the fruit juice itself cause diabetes?

It’s a complicated question, but the quick version is that fruit juice has a lot of fast acting carbohydrates, so, if you drink a lot of it, you can gain weight and you need to make a lot of insulin quickly to take care of it. If you are high risk for diabetes, this could put you over the edge.
