Type 2
Question from Belgrade, Montana, USA:
Can type 2 diabetes go away? Can other prescribed medications make it seem as if the diabetes has gone away?
Answer:
No, diabetes does not go away, but it certainly can be controlled. Once it is controlled and the blood sugars approach normal readings, it seems as if it has gone away and the risk for complications is greatly reduced.
However, diabetes is a chronic illness, and over time, there will be a continued loss of beta cell function. In time, one usually progresses from controlling the type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise to pills and ultimately to insulin. The bottom line is that we should strive to achieve good control no matter what treatment it takes to get there.
